This piece is called Relic, and created as a reflection on the spidery structures that rise from the North Sea as if from the pages of H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds.
There are around 270 oil rigs in the North Sea. Some have reached the end of their commissioned life, others sit above fields run dry. Due to depletion of resources and growing demands for clean energy, the future of the rigs is uncertain.
Removing them is an extremely disruptive and expensive process. Leaving them in situ is a huge potential hazard to contaminating the marine environment. What is clear is that they were built with no thought to their future, and the arguments over decommission are driven by money rather than environmental concern.
Larry is a piece of history that will go on, leaving the rigs in her wake.
